The first weekend travel experiences I remember were my father’s “Mystery Rides.” On a Saturday and to give my Mom a break, he would load my siblings and me into the car for a ride into the unknown, hence the “Mystery Ride.” The journey revolved around us guessing where we were going, my Dad giving clues, and he would even make little detours to play with our imagination. We may have ended up at the movies to see a sequel to “The Three musketeers,” a visit to a local amusement park, ice skating rink, broadway show, arcade, or even down to the Jersey Shore.
The “Mystery Rides” have inspired lifelong adventures for me. And in many cases, our adventures were only an afternoon.
Travel can be around the corner in a micro-adventure to a local farmer’s market, lakeside, neighborhood, downtown, historic site, or a museum. It can be to a special event like a festival, concert, or event. Or travel can be further away by bus, car, or plane.
